(Nerd) Lunch Special: Krispy Kreme Chocolate Glaze Doughnuts

For a very limited time, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is overhauling their glazed doughnuts and replacing the original glaze with a chocolate glaze. This is in honor of the eclipse on August 21, 2017.

The chocolate glaze is only available between August 19 and 21. At our location in Tallahassee, Florida, it completely replaces the original glaze because there is only one machine that cranks out glazed doughnuts. I presume a larger location might be able to offer both if they have multiple doughnut-glazing conveyor belts.

Arriving as a family at dinnertime, we ordered a dozen of these. The “Hot & Ready” sign was on and we got freshly chocolate-glazed doughnuts. The chocolate glaze not only appears to be thicker and richer than the regular glaze, but tastes that way, too. Just like the moon will cover the sun, this glaze completely covers the regular doughnut so there is no sign of anything not chocolate. And I caution you to not stare at these too long for if you hesitate to eat, you may find someone else comes along and eats all these before you can.

The chocolate glaze is amazingly messy right off the conveyor belt. Regular glaze seems to cool faster and start developing a “shell” much faster than these did. These took quite some time before not being a gooey mess. Those that weren’t eaten until the next morning were molded in place and had to be excavated out with a utensil. This is not a strike against these doughnuts, simply a warning to you who try these.

Personally I thought this glaze was great and I hope it makes a return sometime down the road…before the next eclipse. I recommend trying them while you can. And if you do, come back here and let us know in the comments section what you thought!
