Nerd Lunch Podcast 38: TV Crossovers

Perhaps the Internet’s leading expert on TV crossovers and the founder of, Thom Holbrook, joins us for a great episode this week. We discuss what makes a crossover great, run down some of our favorites, and then propose some crossovers we wish would happen.  Our conversation is a roll call of great TV from Bob Newhart to The Bionic Woman to The Drew Carey Show to Mork and Mindy.  OK, maybe great isn’t the best description.  In this week’s Nerd To-Dos, we get our first genealogy related to-do, a re-commitment to comic book reading, and more Avengers items (it might take us awhile to get over that one, folks).

Excellent topic. Excellent conversation. Wished I was there. I was not. I cried a little bit. Great, great episode.

Great episode guys. A few thoughts:

    – I agree with you CT that there should have been a TNG-Dominion War cross over. In fact they should have done that in the movie 'Star Trek: Insurrection' as it takes place during the war, and it was even referenced.

    – I had wished they would have had a massive 24th century Trek series crossover, but I think the syndication deals they had in place during TNG/DS9 made that impossible. Because not every TV station carried both series, in fact more stations carried DS9 because it sold better than TNG because more TV stations bought into it after seeing TNG's success. So you couldn't have part one of a crossover start out on TNG with part two on DS9, thus we were stuck with lame character crossovers (Bashir on the Enterprise, Quark on the view screen, etc). And then Voyager was on UPN and not sold to syndication so there was a definite TV station barrier between Voyager and DS9 so again we had lame character crossovers (mirror universe Tuvok on DS9, Quark on the Voyager pilot, etc).

    – Also my fave scene Trek crossover was when Scotty recreated the original bridge from TOS. And then to have Picard on the original series bridge was so awesome.

    – I'm also a huge Law & Order fan and the character of Detective John Munch, played by Richard Belzer has become the only fictional character, played by a single actor, to appear on ten different television shows (Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, 30 Rock,The X-Files, Arrested Development, The Beat, The Wire, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!). Munch has been one of the few television characters to cross genres, appearing not only in crime drama series, but sitcom (Arrested Development), late night comedy (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and horror and science fiction (The X-Files). The Munch character was originally from 'Homicide: Life on the Street'. Very interesting.

    – Also there is a comic book coming out where Star Trek: TNG and Doctor Who will be crossing over. Wish there was a Trek series on TV right now so we could have a real cross over between that series and the Matt Smith 'Doctor'.

And finally I have to see Jessica Fletcher team up with Thomas Magnum. Those are 2 of my favourite 80's TV series. Never knew they crossed over. A Magnum P.I./A-Team crossover would have been awesome.

And I agree with you CT: better not to have had a Magnum P.I./Quantum Leap crossover!!
