Nerd Lunch Podcast 97: Ready Player One

This week CT, Jeeg and Pax are joined by show regular Shawn Robare to discuss the nerdarific book, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.  We talk about our pre-knowledge of the book, what we thought of the characters and what we thought of all of the 80s pop culture references that are strewn throughout the text.  We quite thoroughly discuss this book.  Nerd To-Dos involve bootleg Powell-Peralta skate tapes, William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet, and more Game of Thrones, Farscape and Burn Notice viewing.

I like the story, and I like the characters. But "Ready Player One" is nowhere near the book that it could have been. Simply playing to a group's obsession with pop culture doesn't make a good book, and it doesn't excuse failures in writing.

I highly recommend "Ready Player One" to just about everyone I know. It is a celebration of a book — an electrifying & thoughtful story filled with heart & fun, and written with the sly smartness & authentic sincerity that I'm sure will be earmark for all Ernest Cline books to come. Excelsior!

  3. This is an incredibly entertaining story, one that nerds and those who grew up in the 80s will especially enjoy. I'm sad the journey is over.

Highly recommended. Just a magical book with a cast of characters that you will really care about. Even though this takes place in the year 2044, the sense of nostalgia and the world created will take you back in time to the way you felt when you were 18. I promise.
