Nerd Lunch Podcast 111: Guilty Displeasures 2

The guys return to a topic they haven’t done since Episode 4. And they do it in a three way dance. Things the fellas feel they should enjoy but don’t include Mountain Dew flavor extensions, zombies, comic books, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and peppermint. Lots to reveal and discuss.

Double kudos to Mrs. CT. I made it to the end of yet another episode. 🙂

I might have missed it (or was it a secret hidden episode), but where is #110? Or is it just a numbering issue?

Carlton, you're a prince! I'll be eager to hear what a self-proclaimed nerd thinks of my foray into steampunk, which has to be sort of a poster-genre for nerdiness in itself…

    Hey Jack,

I've heard before the same feedback about our topic approach. I personally enjoy doing the drill downs despite knowing that we might lose listeners who don't enjoy that topic. In fact, sometimes in the drill downs, we lose each other. Oddly enough, our stats indicate that we don't have much of a drop off with drill downs, nor much of a spike with topics like this. I doubt we have many listeners who listen to every show anyway. Heck, I'm pretty sure Pax doesn't even listen to our show ever. Either way, we're always talking about topics and ways to improve the show and listenership engagement (probably to a fault at times). We do appreciate and listen to feedback.

I do hold out hope that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will improve. There's a premise in there that can work, but they haven't figured it out yet. I hope that next time I check in on it, I can see a noticeable improvement and maybe decide to pick it back up.

I now have a new Nerd To-Do: Purchase Beyond the Rails and mention it on an upcoming show (probably won't be until #113)!

Good afternoon, my friends. Just listened to 111, and enjoyed it tremendously. Food for thought: When you do a drill-down episode, it's great if I (or any listener) am familiar with the subject; if not, the response is to click-on. These general interest ones are fun for everyone.
My biggies are the Cuddly Vampire genre (yes, you, Twilight!), and I have to include Game of Thrones in there. And traditional zombies, although the modern version in which it is a disease instead of supernatural has more attraction. A monster that is scientifically plausible has to hold some terrors that Bela, Boris and Lon couldn't bring. My daughter and I love the Left4Dead franchise with its fast-moving, sneaky zombies with their various powers and attacks that they bring; very exciting stuff.
I'm with you on your Agents of Shield assessment. While I'm not a big comic book guy, I enjoy a well put together ensemble show, but it seems like, if a property wasn't made for TV to start with, it doesn't seem to translate well. I can't imagine anything they could do to make viable weekly 007 drama, for instance.
A great job, a lot of food for thought and further discussion here. I could go on for pages, but I won't; I have my own blog for that. CT, next time you're on Kindle, search Beyond the Rails, and see if it moves you… Sorry, just a little pimpin' that slips out once in a while. Carry on…
