Nerd Lunch Podcast 194: Star Wars Phantom Menace Drill Down

The Nerds are once again joined by Michael May and Kay to discuss the Star Wars prequels, starting with Episode I: The Phantom Menace. We talk about the first trailer in Nov 1998, the build up to the movie in May 1999, we talk about Celebration I in Denver and then we start digging into what we liked and didn’t like. Lots of talk about Jake Lloyd, George Lucas’ writing and of course, Jar Jar Binks.

Qui-Gon is excellent. Darth Maul and the whole final fight scene is pretty great. Ian McDarimid is terrific as always. I think Ewan McGregor was fine, but I think he was sabotaged by the script and a lack of things to do, considering how he shines in the other two movies.

There were some amazing ideas in here that are unique and very much felt Star Wars, some beautiful design work, a few cool scenes and sequences, but when combined in the way they were…it’s a mess! Certain things went on way too long, others were far too short.

A couple years ago I made edits of the prequels so I could finally show them to my kids (I never could bring myself to show them the actual movies as released). The Phantom Menace ended up being a quick paced 45 minutes long and, if I do say so myself, not entirely horrible to watch. And there was only one real jarring cut as Darth Maul attacks Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan near a Coruscant power station (yep, they never go back to Naboo in my cut). If only there had been one or two good shots to use to transition to it.
